Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone has a wonderful year filled with love and prosperity and good health. My New Years resolution (the same as last years) is to get off my rear and get some exercise.
My New Year's Resolutions
I will not throw the cat out the window
Or put a frog in my sister's bed
I will not tie my brother's shoelaces together
Nor jump from the roof of Dad's shed
I shall remember my aunt's next birthday
And tidy my room once a week
I'll not moan at Mum's cooking (Ugh! fish fingers again!)
Nor give her any more of my cheek.
I will not pick my nose if I can help it
I shall fold up my clothes, comb my hair,
I will say please and thank you (even when I don't mean it)
And never spit or shout or even swear.
I shall write each day in my diary
Try my hardest to be helpful at school
I shall help old ladies cross roads (even if they don't want to)
And when others are rude I'll stay cool.
I'll go to bed with the owls and be up with the larks
And close every door behind me
I shall squeeze from the bottom of every toothpaste tube
And stay where trouble can't find me.
I shall start again, turn over a new leaf,
leave my bad old ways forever
shall I start them this year, or next year
shall I sometime, or .....?

Merry Christmas!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although it’s been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you!

I am so behind! I just put up my tree and haven't started my shopping yet. I did buy stamps though, that must count for something. Merry Christmas everybody!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone has a wonderful day spent with friends and family. I look forward to my mom's turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, though my favorite food served is the chips and dips. I don't diet on Thanksgiving, and nobody else should either.

What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving? ~Erma Bombeck

Red Grandson

I feel so lucky that The Shopping Mama picked me as the winner in their blog giveaway for this adorable mini portrait! Emma from Blue Day Designs did a terrific job in creating this adorable little portrait of my two year old grandson, Thomas.I simply sent her my original photo (the bottom one) and she sent me several options, including one in blue and one in black. I chose the red one because for some reason it just suited my grandson's personality. I love it!

Fall Behind

Remember to set your clocks back an hour tonight at 2:00 am. It is also a good idea to check the batteries in your smoke alarm. I am not looking forward to it being so dark. I always end up feeling a little depressed and sleeping and eating too much.

Happy Sweetest Day

This is the first I have heard of Sweetest Day, but apparently it's been around since 1922.It started as a day to bring happiness to shut-ins, orphans, and others who are forgotten or lonely or otherwise underpriveleged. It has now evolved into a day to show appreciation to friends, family, and romantic partners. Any occasion to buy chocolate is okay with me!

Happy Columbus Day

Happy Columbus Day! Columbus Day to me is so exciting because my inbox is filled with coupons. I plan on spending the day shopping. Oh yeah, also the day is honored to commemorate the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492.

In Memory of the Victims and Heroes of September 11th 2001

For the past few days, the news has been reminding us of the anniversary of one of the most horrible days America has ever seen. I really don't need a reminder. I remember every detail of that awful day. It is so hard to believe it has been 9 years. I hope and pray that my grandchildren will never know such a horrible day.

My new grandson Aiden decided to make his appearance a month early. He is sooo tiny! He is 4 pounds, 13 ounces. He is totally perfect-just in miniature.

Happy 4th of July Weekend!

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. ~Erma Bombeck

Goodbye Home Depot and Chevron

Both Home Depot and Chevron have lost me and my family as customers forever. Recently I got a letter from Chevron stating that they are reducing my credit card limit to $100.00 after a review of my credit. Then yesterday I went into Home Depot to rent a power cleaner and my Home Depot card was declined. When I called them, they said they reviewed my credit and decided to cancel my credit card. I have had credit with both of these companies for many years and never made a late payment. My credit numbers have improved over the years, so I don't get it. I am a small fry customer at Chevron and they probably won't miss me, but Home Depot is another story. My boyfriend is a flooring installer and purchases most of his material through them. He also sends his customers there. We are talking thousands of dollars per month. He will no longer shop there either. I honestly don't understand why a company would lose a long time customer over low limit credit card. Luckily there are plenty of gas stations and a Lowe's nearby.

Happy Father's Day

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. ~Mark Twain, "Old Times on the Mississippi" 1874

Happy Memorial Day

Home of the Brave
by Roger Robicheau

Through the feel of war they brave this day
How proud they stand, their unselfish way

Our soldiers bear what we cannot see
They assure our right to live life free

Each trained will face an unknown fate
Our support they need, don’t hesitate

Just imagine how this land would be
Without their courage - catastrophe

All the liberties we have grown to know
Would not exist, this life would go

Find a thankfulness within your mind
Speak gratitude for our bravest kind

Have the willingness to show you care
For fallen heroes, hold back no tear

Reach out to God with his guiding light
For our troops do pray, both day and night

America raise your flags to wave
For we truly are 'home of the brave'

Happy Mother's Day

I am lucky enough to be spending Mother's Day in Las Vegas visiting my boyfriend's lovely mother. The weather is beautiful here right now. I plan on spending the next few days laying by the pool with a good book, and maybe I'll do a little gambling. Here is a pretty poem I found about mothers. Happy Mother's Day to everyone!

Wonderful Mother
God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.

May Day

I just realized it was May Day.I remember when I was a little girl we celebrated by leaving a little basket of flowers on our neighbor's porches and ringing their doorbell. Such a sweet custom. I wonder why people don't do that anymore. Next year I most certainly will. Happy May Day to everybody!

Yikes

I had the worst news from my dentist. I have to get dentures! Full upper and a partial lower plate. I am devastated! And terrified! I HATE going to the dentist, which is why I am in this position in the first place. I have advanced periodontal disease, which I guess can sneak up on you unawares. Anyway, take it from me-floss!

Tax Day

This is what I am working on this morning-it is crazy! My sister only lived in Oregon part of the year, these are the instructions on how to fill out an Oregon part year resident form.

Example: Delaney began working for the U.S. Forest
Service March 31, 1976, and retired January 7, 2009.
She worked a total of 393 months; 186 months were
worked before October 1, 1991. Delaney moved to
Oregon on May 31, 2009. She can subtract 47.3 percent
(186 ÷ 393) of her taxable federal pension. She
will use this percentage for both her federal column
and her Oregon column. She will multiply the percentage
by the amount in each column to determine the correct
subtraction for each column.
On her Form 40P, line 17F, she has $14,000 and on line
17S she has $9,000. Her federal pension subtraction
for the federal column is $6,622 ($14,000 x 0.473). Her
federal pension subtraction for the Oregon column
is $4,257 ($9,000 x 0.473). Since she is only claiming
one “Other subtraction,” Delaney will enter “307” on
line 37x and “$6,622” on line 37y. Then she will enter
“$6,622” on line 37F and “$4,257” on line 37S. She
will continue to subtract 47.3 percent of her taxable
federal pension in future years.

Easter Pics

I am so behind on my photos. Both my sons and my grandson had birthdays recently and the pictures are still sitting in my camera. Here are a couple of pictures my daughter sent me-she obviously didn't inherit my procrastination tendencies.

Happy Easter

I love everything about Easter, the pastel colors of spring flowers, marshmallow peeps, the brightly colored eggs, children in new spring clothes, but most of all the end of winter-which is always a gloomy time for me. Just when it feels it will never end, another spring arrives. I was searching for a poem or something to express my feelings about it, and found this which I never have heard; but think is so pretty:
The fasts are done; the Aves said;
The moon has filled her horn
And in the solemn night I watch
Before the Easter morn.
So pure, so still the starry heaven,
So hushed the brooding air,
I could hear the sweep of an angel's wings
If one should earthward fare.
~Edna Dean Proctor, "Easter Morning"

I wish everybody a wonderful day filled with sunshine, children, church, and chocolate!

One year!

It's official. I am a non-smoker! I quit a year ago today. I am so much happier and healthier though 5 pounds heavier. I still have occasional cravings, but they don't last long. I can really credit Allen Carr's book "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking". It wasn't easy, but his book was very motivating. The quit smoking meter I have states I have saved $1461.00 and haven't smoked 7307 cigarettes based on a pack a day-though sometimes I smoked more than that. Oh, who am I kidding, I usually smoked more than that. With the money I have saved I am getting some much needed dental work. I know it's a boring reward, but one I really want.

Welcome Spring

My spring break from school has come and gone already. I didn't accomplish a thing except take a much needed nap and clean out a few closets. It is so pretty here in Oregon right now. There are pretty flowers everywhere and we had a big rain storm today. I love this time of year!

Yes, I am okay!

I am fine, and feel almost like my old self. A big thanks to everyone who inquired! I am in the middle of studying for final exams and writing final essays. I am getting closer and closer to graduation and I honestly can't wait. I was not fond of school as a kid and am even less fond of it now.

Paging Dr. House

The past few weeks have been no fun around here. First I get a tooth infection, now I have the flu. A really evil flu. I missed an assignment and a test. I have not ate anything in days except Jello. I am starving, aching, bored and lonely. I need a handsome doctor to cheer me up.

Martin Luther King Day

Today is Martin Luther King Day. It is the celebration of the life of our great civil rights leader; Reverend Martin Luther King. He is most famous for his beloved speech I Have a Dream, which contains the line "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".If you would like to read the full speech, you can find it at MLK Online. This site also has pictures, videos, and other information on the late, great Martin Luther King.

My computer was attacked!

The other day, I was innocently entering giveaways on my laptop when up popped a program called Malware Defender. The pop-up wouldn't X out and kept telling me I was infected. Then I got several more pop-ups inviting me to send them money for them to get rid of the pop-ups. These pop-ups took over my whole computer-they even overwrote my McAfee program. I cannot even start my computer in safe mode to attempt to fix it. I then got a rash of little pornography shortcuts on my desktop. I don't have any idea what program I opened to cause this, but my laptop is toast. I had to buy another laptop and now I am afraid to open anything for fear it will happen again. I am researching virus protection and hopefully this will never happen again-it could get expensive!
